An Interview With Karla Hatfield
How many years have you been selling travel?
I have been selling travel for over 20 years in a couple of different roles, which has given me a great experience to see different sides of the travel industry.
My career started out doing Incentive Travel. I worked for a company that would be hired to movtivate and "Incentivize" employees, which culminated in group travel. The actual travel was just a piece of the job. We would have to plan and execute a marketing plan for each group/trip, which could include monthly mail out "teasers". Most of the larger groups would also have a kick off party to announce winners of the trip and also to announce the next years destination. This was definitely a fun and creative way to start out in travel.
In my next role, I joined Maritime Travel where I stayed for 13 years, selling travel as a leisure consultant, then as a Branch Partner and finally as the Branch Mananger. I was also involved in the Train the Trainer program, where I would help train new staff, do upgrade training and was also a Beta Tester for new products and systems for Maritime Travel. After being in the branch, I worked at our Head Office to do some behind the scenes work for 3 years.
I left Maritime Travel for a short time, but since I'm a Maritime Travel lifer, I returned to Maritime Travel at The Halifax Shopping Centre branch in July 2012.
What are your hobbies?
Of course, I love to travel but outside of that I love to read and spend time with my family at the cottage. As a mom, my sons hobbies have become my hobbies...if you can call being a chauffeur a hobby!
What type of resort activities do you favor? ie water sports, lounging by the pool, etc?
When I'm away at a resort destination, it's all about relaxing and lounging by the pool. I enjoy taking in the shows and participating in the water activities as well. If there's a water slide, you'll definitely find me there!
What are your favorite destinations?
For a sun destination, I'm very partial to the Mayan Riviera. I love the quality of the resorts and food. Plus I love the excursions that are available at this destination.
Everywhere I've travelled in Europe I have loved. I want to go back to Italy and spend some more time exploring.
What languages do you speak?
English is my only language, although I'm getting good at ordering wine in a number of languages :)!
