Itinerary

Saturday, February 9
Travel so San Jose, capital of Costa Rica. After clearing customs and immigration, and claiming your luggage, you will be met by private transfer to the Crowne Plaza San Jose Corobici Hotel, just 15 minutes from the airport, and five minute from downtown San Jose. This will be our home for the next two nights. Later we will meet up with Maxine and our fellow travellers for a welcome dinner at the hotel. D

Sunday, February 10
Following breakfast, we begin our exploration of Costa Rica, starting with a drivethrough city tour of San Jose prior to departing the Central Valley and heading into the hills surrounding the city. Our first stop will be a tour of DOKA ESTATE COFFEE PLANTATION. Doka coffee processing plant (mill) is the oldest hydro powered or wet mill in Costa Rica. The processing plant still functions as efficiently as when it was first built. For this reason it was declared “Historical and Architectural Heritage “ by the Costa Rican government 1993. We will experience firsthand how a choice bean is transformed into our morning cup of coffee. Of course, there will be some delicious sampling involved! We then continue our adventure as we travel to LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDENS AND PARK. We will hike with our local guide along the La Paz River past five amazing waterfalls and enjoy a delicious Costa Rican lunch prior to visiting the exciting areas of this park located in a cloudforest and rainforest setting. You will not want to miss the cat and bird exhibits, the butterfly observatory, hummingbird gardens, snake and frog exhibits and much more. The balance of the day and evening are on your own to relax or explore San Jose. B L

Monday, February 11
After an enjoyable breakfast we will check out of our hotel and bid hasta luego to San Jose, as we head out for more adventure. We will travel northeast and enter the scenic and mystical BRAULIO CARRILLO NATIONAL PARK. Witness cascading waterfalls set amidst Jurassic Park-like jungle. Notice the differences in vegetation as we transit from tropical rainforest to cloudforest and cross the Continental Divide to the Caribbean side of the country. We will climb aboard the CARIBBEAN RAINFOREST AERIAL TRAM and glide through 2.6 kilometers of rainforest accompanied by an English-speaking naturalist guide who will explain the various ecosystems from the forest floor to the tree tops. Following this adventure, we will check in to HACIENDA LA ISLA LODGE. The rest of the day and evening are yours to relax and enjoy your surroundings. This small, Spanish colonial hotel, located at the edge of the national park and just a short drive from the rainforest aerial tram, is the perfect place to discover the mysteries of this tropical rainforest. Tuesday, February 12 & Wednesday, February 13
After enjoying a typical Costa Rican breakfast, it’s time to set out to discover theCaribbean coast, and to explore the Amazon of Costa Rica. We will drive past vast banana plantations, board our boat and travel along rivers and canals through jungle waterways to EVERGREEN LODGE, our jungle home for the next two nights. The lodge is located in the middle of Tortuguero’s teeming tropical forest, which is considered one of Costa Rica’s most exotic areas, rich with plants and animals. Located just 5 minutes from the main entrance to TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK, the lodge is a strategic place for exploring the magic of this unique, protected area. You will have everything you need to relax and enjoy the area - including a guided boat tour through the striking canals of the park. This park is one of the most important nesting sites in the world for giant leatherback turtles, green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles. The park also features 112 ecological habitats and allows great diversity of fauna and flora to be observed close at hand. It is very common to find various species of monkeys swinging through the trees, as well as hundreds of bird species and wildlife including tiger herons, boas, caimans, bats, iguanas, basilisks, tiny tree frogs and much more. Also included in our stay here is a visit to tiny TORTUGUERO VILLAGE, a visit to the TURTLE MUSEUM to learn about the conservation of the green turtle, and a hike along the nesting beaches. We will have free time over our two days to enjoy the lodge’s kayaks to do our own exploring outside the national park. Our guide will be with us in our exploration of this amazing area. B L D each day

Thursday, February 14
Following breakfast we will say farewell to the Caribbean coast and travel via boat through the canals and rivers to meet up with our driver and coach and continue our exploration as we travel to the northern region of the country. We will stop for lunch at SELVA VERDE RAINFOREST LODGE prior to proceeding to the area of one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes - the splendid and famous ARENAL VOLCANO and man-made ARENAL LAKE. We will have our own impressive views of the volcano & lake, when we check into the ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE, our home for the next two nights. This is the only hotel located within ARENAL NATIONAL PARK. We will be literally surrounded by the wonders of the rainforest. We will have time to settle into our “room with a view,” to relax and to explore our surroundings. This evening is at leisure. B L

Friday, February 15
Are you an early riser? Our alarm clock this morning might be a Howler Monkey or a Montezuma Oropendula! Enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake or viewing the mighty Arenal. Spend the morning with our guide hiking the trails around the lodge (one trail takes you to a picturesque waterfall), swimming in the infinity pool or checking out other activities available in the area. Mid-afternoon we will visit the beautiful hot springs of TABACON GRAND THERMAL RESORT & SPA. If you are looking for the Garden of Eden, this is it! This resort is located at the base of the volcano with many thermal pools to enjoy the beautiful healing properties of mineral waters. B D

Saturday, February 16
This morning get set for another adventure as we leave the Northern Highlands and take a picturesque drive around the top of Arenal Lake, before heading south west to the Pan American Highway – the longest highway in the world. Our destination – the NICOYA PENINSULA. We will cross the gulf by ferry from the port of PUNTARENAS to PAQUERA Pier and continue on to TANGO MAR BEACH RESORT, our home for the next three nights. This intimate, deluxe resort is located on a 150-acre private beachfront reserve. It offers both the ultimate relaxing escape, or an active eco-vacation – the choice is yours. The reserve boasts magnificent beaches and varied ecosystems, which are home to a plethora of exotic plants and animals. You will be able to choose among a range of soft and adrenaline-rush activities: horseback riding, kayaking, zip lining, hiking, bird watching, golf, sunset cruises, visits to wildlife reserves or just relax and enjoy - the choice is yours. The brightly painted miniature oxcarts that you will see all over the country are made here. A visit to an oxcart factory is a must here and this is a good place to purchase wooden gifts made of rare hardwoods from the nation’s forests. This afternoon we will arrive in San Jose, and check into the WYNDHAM HERRADURA SAN JOSE.
