Itinerary

Sunday, February 7
Travel to San Jose, capital of Costa Rica. After clearing customs and immigration, and claiming your luggage, you will be met by Maxine and transferred to the Crowne Plaza San Jose Corobici Hotel, just 15 minutes from the airport, and five minutes from downtown San Jose. The balance of the day/evening is at leisure.

Monday, February 8
Following breakfast, we begin our adventure as we leave the city and the Central Valley behind us. We will pass through Jurassic Park-like BRAULIO CARRILLO NATIONAL PARK and cross the Continental Divide to the Caribbean side of the country. Enjoy the relaxing CARIBBEAN RAINFOREST AERIAL TRAM through more than 2 km of rainforest canopy accompanied by your own naturalist guide who will explain the various ecosystems from forest floor to tree tops. Following lunch we will travel to the SARAPIQUI RIVER for a boat tour and hope to catch glimpses of wildlife along the river prior to checking into SELVA VERDE RAINFOREST LODGE (2 nights). The lodge boasts 440 of the country’s more than 850 recorded bird species. Fauna such as keel-billed toucans, great green macaws, sloths and howler monkeys can be spotted in the lodge areas and on the reserve so get ready and do not miss the experience of walking together with thousands of other species!! Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner at LA TERRAZA RESTAURANT, located below the lodge’s main dining room. B D

Tuesday, February 9
After an enjoyable breakfast, we will have a chance to discover the world of “voluntourism,” which is all about giving back to the destinations we visit. We will be provided with a unique opportunity to make a difference and help a community. The project is arranged by the SCLC (Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center). We will have a choice of either taking part in a reforestation project on a local farm or painting at a local senior facility or school. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the pool and trails at the lodge or arrange for one of the many tours available in the area. You might choose to explore the rainforest on a night walk with our local guide, Mario. Prior to dinner, we will visit the SCLC located at the lodge property where we will learn about the history, their mission and efforts to help conserve the green macaw habitat in this area and how our project will help towards achieving their goals. Dinner tonight is in the main dining room, upstairs. B L D

Wednesday, February 10
This morning we will cross the Sarapiqui River to enter the Primary Forest Reserve of old growth and secondary forest for a hike with a naturalist guide. Following our hike (easy), we will travel to the northern region and to one of the most famous volcanoes in the country. We will travel through tiny villages and dairy farms as we make our way through this “Switzerland of the Americas”. The regions major attractions are the splendid and famous ARENAL VOLCANO, its national park and man-made ARENAL LAKE. LA FORTUNA is the closest town to the volcano and on a clear day one will have the opportunity to view its almost perfect cone. This volcano has been continually active since 1968. We will stop for lunch at Que Rico Restaurante located at ARENAL VOLCANO INN and known for the Artisan Pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven. Following lunch, we will make our way up the mountain to ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE (2 nights). Located with impressive views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake, this hotel was chosen by scientists from Smithsonian Institute who needed a close but safe place for their research on the volcano. It is the only hotel within ARENAL NATIONAL PARK. We will be literally surrounded by the wonders of the rainforest. We will have time to settle into our “room with a view,” to relax and to explore our surroundings. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner together. This evening is at leisure. B L D

Thursday, February 11
Are you an early riser? Our alarm clock this morning might be a Howler Monkey or a Montezuma Oropendula! Enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake or viewing the mighty Arenal. Spend the morning with our guide hiking the trails around the lodge (one trail takes you to a picturesque waterfall), swimming in the infinity pool or checking out other activities available in the area. Mid-afternoon we will visit the beautiful hot springs of TABACON GRAND THERMAL RESORT & SPA. If you are looking for the Garden of Eden, this is it! This resort is located at the base of the volcano with many thermal pools to enjoy the beautiful healing properties of mineral waters. We enjoy an amazing buffet dinner this evening. B D

Friday, February 12
Following breakfast this morning, we take a boat ride across man-made LAKE ARENAL to meet up with our coach and journey to the beautiful and mystical area of MONTEVERDE, where trees grow to heights of more than 100 feet! Enjoy the view as we transition from rainforest to cloud forest. We will be amazed by the emerald-green foliage and the symphony sung by Monteverde’s animal kingdom. We will arrive at FICUS SUNSET SUITES HOTEL (2 nights). Located in the heart of Monteverde and within walking distance from the small town of SANTA ELENA, you will find great local restaurants, shops and a grocery store close by. We will spend the next two nights here and be prepared to experience amazing sunsets and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy and explore. You might wish to check out the ranarium or frog pond in the village for a glimpse of the “glass frog” , explore the shops and sights in the quaint little town or simply enjoy sitting on your balcony or patio while watching colourful birds and exotic animals that might frequent the branches near your suite. B D

Saturday, February 13
Following breakfast, we will join our guide as we hike (easy) the SELVATURA HANGING BRIDGES, a combination of suspension bridges, plus hiking trails. Count on up-close views of Costa Rica’s famous forest ecosystems and possible close encounters with the cloudforest inhabitants! If we are fortunate, we may spy the “resplendant quetzal” bird - the wish of many travellers who venture here. The afternoon and evening are free to relax or enjoy another of the many activities available in the area. B

Sunday, February 14
This morning get set for another adventure as we leave the mountains of the Monteverde Cloudforest behind us and journey West and South to the PAN AMERICAN HIGHWAY – the longest highway in the world. Our destination – the NICOYA PENINSULA. We will cross the gulf by ferry from the port of PUNTARENAS to PAQUERA Pier and continue on to TANGO MAR BEACH RESORT, our home for the next three nights. This intimate, deluxe resort is located on a 150-acre private beachfront reserve. It offers both the ultimate relaxing escape, or an active eco-vacation – the choice is yours. The reserve boasts magnificent beaches and varied ecosystems, which are home to a plethora of exotic plants and animals. You will be able to choose among a range of soft and adrenaline-rush activities: horseback riding, kayaking, zip lining, hiking, bird watching, golf, sunset cruises, visits to wildlife reserves or just relax and enjoy - the choice is yours. A Valentine’s Day dinner is included tonight in the restaurant overlooking the stunning Pacific Ocean. B D

Wednesday, February 17
After breakfast, we will check out of our resort and make our way back to the Central Valley. We will visit SARCHI, Costa Rica’s main artisan town, before continuing on to San Jose. The brightly painted miniature oxcarts that you will see all over the country are made here. A visit to an oxcart factory is a must here and this is a good place to purchase wooden gifts made of rare hardwoods from the nation’s forests. Our last night in Costa Rica will be at CROWNE PLAZA COROBICI HOTEL We will have time to relax before gathering together for a farewell dinner and raise a glass to shared experiences with new friends and bid “adios” and “pura vida” to this ecological wonderland.
