Sun, sand, clear skies, mountain backdrops, frothy drinks and the delicious aroma of Mexican cuisine will have you enjoying one of your best vacations ever!

I stayed at the Riu Palace Pacifico March 19th - April 2nd with my husband and enjoyed a wonderful 2 week vacation with plenty of time to relax, see the sights and indulge in my favourite Mexican dishes.

The Hotel Riu Palace Pacifico is located  on  the shores of Banderas Bay in the Riviera Nayarit region. Approximately a 25 min drive from Puerto Vallarta to the South, 5 min drive from Bucerias and 30 min from Sayulita to the North. All 3 towns offer different experiences not to be missed.

This resort is perfect for families, couples and singles. When I visited, there were plenty of young children who had a variety activities to keep them busy. Riu Land is the kids club and one of the featured activities is "Work at Riu for the Day". The kids joined housekeeping to learn how to make towel animals, visited the chefs in the kitchen and made their own pizzas plus practising with the Animation team their routines.

The hotel has 445 guest rooms. Most have partial oceanview. The standard rooms are junior suites but the views may be of the condominium next door or the parking lot at the rear. I strongly suggest that you book a partial oceanview or higher. There are fabulous oceanfront suites available with Jacuzzi tubs on the expansive outdoor balconies.

Junior suites are split level with the bathroom, minibar and bed located on the top level and 2 steps down you have a coffee table, sofa or sofa bed, 2 chairs and a round table. All rooms are equipped with one or two beds depending on room category or preference, hydromassage tubs, hairdryers, telephones, central air, ceiling fans, mini fridge stocked with beer, pop and water, in-room liquor dispensers, coffee maker, complimentary in -room electronic safe, iron/ironing board, and turndown service. Interconnecting rooms are also available.

Restaurant options include: 24hr room service with great selections and large portions, La Peninsula buffet restaurant featuring selections for Mexico, UK, and North American tastes, Krystal Fusion restaurant (my favourite a la carte), Kyoto Japanese, Guacamole Mexican and Toscana Steakhouse which functions as an alternative lunch buffet. A la cartes may be booked with a maximum of 2 at a time and for up to 3 days in advance. I had no problems getting into any of my choices.  At 1;30pm each day there is a bbq set up by the beach bar which features fabulous fare including bbq ribs, pork chops, fajitas, chicken, paella etc on a rotating basis. Best bbq ribs ever!!

Bar services are offered at the Bolero Lounge featuring a pianist in the early evening, Colibri bar located on the terrace outside the Theatre, Petit Peqalie Lobby Bar, 24hr sports bar and the beach bar with swim up stools and tables.

The beach is wide and very long with soft brown sand. I did find it difficult for walking, however, I had not walked at home in the last 6 months. My calves were killing me after the first morning. The other 2 Riu's are about a 12 min walk down the beach to the South. Bucerias is about a 30 min walk to the North.  There were plenty of beach chairs available within the palm trees but if you wanted to be right in front of the ocean, you had rent a beach umbrella from the local vendors to get some shade. Beachside service was very good.

The pool had many loungers to choose from but you did have to get up early in the morning to get your preferred spot. I liked being close to the pool bar with the stair entry into the pool and the overhead trellis for shade. Plenty of poolside activities abound including trivia, pool games, water aerobics, challenges involving soccer balls and pool nets, a drink cart sporting new and different flavored beverages each day, and a snack cart with daily specials (mango on a stick, ceviche, popcorn, peanuts, fro-yo's etc.) The poolside service was outstanding!

Evening entertainment was varied and the Michael Jackson performance was fantastic. This particular show is not put on by the animation team, but is conducted with a professional troupe who perform at different hotels during the week. The Riu Palace features them on Saturday nights.

On-site retailers include a jewelry store (overpriced), a convenience store and a small shop with clothing, shoes, swimsuits and cover-ups. I shopped down by the beach which has it's own vendor area. I made someone's week with my jewelry purchases:)

I highly recommend this resort to anyone who is looking for an extremely clean, well serviced resort with enough amenities to keep you busy but not overwhelmed. The service is excellent and the food was quite good with plenty of variety to suit all palates. A very enjoyable holiday!
